Hi, Thank you for this site, I have found it extremelly useful, I am having my band on the 5th of May by Mr Sigurdsson, I am extremelly scare and wondering if this is the right thing to do, my BMI is 34.75 so no need for the pre op diet which is a relieve.  I have booked the transport as it is a long way for my husband to take me and pick me up on the Sunday.  I need some encouragement from you all.  I was always very slim until about 10 years ago (after having an hysterectomy) and have put about 1/2 stone a year, I am now 5 stones overweight and dont seem to be able to shift it, have tryed every diet including Lighter Life, am I doing the right thing? i have read all the articles and it seems that it is horrendous after, but dont want to find mysef in another 10 years needing to lose 10 stone. thank you very much for all the posts have been very informative.

So I've bitten the bullet (if that's the saying) and booked with WLS Group at the Yorkshire clinic with James Halstead. i have been doing so much research and forum reading that it was boggling my head but i feel i have made the right choice from all the info and reviews i have read especially on here.

now that i have actually booked it i feel strangely relaxed as its done there is no more debating and do i don't i. it is going to take a lot of getting used to in terms of a new way of life instead of the mindless inhalation of food that i do now. i have 2 children under 2 and this i am hoping will give me the lease of life i need to enjoy them, i am a low BMI of 31 but have about 5 stone to lose in total and i cant even picture what that will do for me. i hope it turns out to be worth it.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first blog after discovering this quite amazing website. I have been looking for something like this for a while now.

So, I was banded on Friday 30th March 2012, so 2 weeks and 1 day ago. Only my husband and 2 friends know about my decision.

I self funded, well, me and my husband took out a loan. I am 23 years old, live in Essex and had start weight of 19st 6lbs, following my pre op diet I managed to get down to 18st 6lbs. My surgery was fine, I was surprisingly no nervous on the day of my surgery. I waited quite calmly and then when my time came walked, calmly down to theatre and then when I came round felt ok and was up and walking as soon as the anaesthetic wore off. I then went home less than 12 hours later, feeling generally ok. Unfortunately then I had a bad reaction and had to be readmitted to hospital on the Monday after being sick every 30 minutes or so. Now for anyone reading this who is considering surgery I want to STRESS that I am an exception - this is NOT a common side effect of gastric banding!

From what the surgeon told me, I have a extremely sensitive stomach, combining that with the anaesthetic it caused me a lot of sickness. So when I was readmitted, I needed to be put on a drip as I was very dehydrated, I also had a scan to make sure everything was ok, and had all fluid removed from the band, so I currently have a completely empty band. After this I was able to keep fluids down. I was discharged from hospital the next morning feeling a lot better. However, I did continue to gag for the next 3 days. which was very unpleasant, but slowly got better.

I am pleased to report that it has now been 15 days since the op and I am able to eat, drink and be merry. I have currently lost 25 lbs, bringing me down to 17st 9lbs.

My surgical wounds are healing nicely and I even mowed the lawn today!

I do not regret the surgery, I do worry still, just because I had a bad experience. I am scared of having my first fill, mainly because psychologically I have been associating the band fill with being sick.

I really hope to get a lot from this site, please feel free to contact me if you would like to, its always nice to talk to others, especially since I have not told anyone else,

Thanks for reading!

Much love xx

Op date in sight, telling people PDF Print E-mail

I started by telling my son who is still living at home and my sister( as I needed the lift). I then told my immediate boss and overall boss. Dates were booked and then the wait started. In my excitement I brought the surgery forward and found myself telling people one by one. Luckily at work everyone is sworn to secrecy so they dont know who else knows. Somehow I've told 15 people at work , even the cleaning lady!!!

My entire family and some friends now know and one neighbour. I'm not a person who lies so for me I have been glad to get it out in the open. Most people are supportive but I have had the 'Why not just go to Weight Watchers?' comment from a few people. I still have alot of my slimming cards from WW,SW,Rosemary Conley etc dating back to 1990. Carrying excess weight isn't something new to me!!!

Mom took it well and I left her to tell dad. He wasn't keen but mom had talked him round, so I thought. He waited until I mentioned the surgery then said he thought it was a bit drastic and went on about my needing cosmestic surgery to remove all the excess skin!!! I explained that Ive not managed to get down to within 2 1/2 stone of a target weight for over 12 years and am back up to being over 4 1/2 stone over weight, something like 6 stone from an ideal target. I've had a crappy 30's and am hoping my 40's are better.

I took my parents to the consultation to help them understand why I was doing it. With the date of surgery brought forward, my sister will be at work so I will be relying on dad to get up really early and drive for an hour to take me to the Hospital. My credit card (interest free for 18months) took the hammering of paying the balance on Wednesday and I thought everything was going smoothly.

Dad called in yesterday and in passing mentioned how he'd read an article on how 2 people had lost huge amounts of weight by themselves. He's obviously not as ok with it as I thought. Later in the day I met an aunt who I only see a couple of times a year. I told her and she smiled and then said my cousin's partner had it done and it nearly killed her. Grrrr!!

I'm re reading all the info about the pre op diets and am starting mine this week. Luckily I have thick skin and think I will be developing selective hearing as NOTHING is going to stop me from taking the first step to finding the new/old me xx
